Backroads Touring - July 28, 2012

July 28, 2012 .... Sun City & Gypsum Hills Pavement Ride

I had the pleasure of leading a scenic ride to Sun City including the Gypsum Hills and Medicine Lodge areas. Members of the group included: Roger Baugh - Wichita, KS - KLR650, Ken Clifford - Wichita, KS - DR650, Don Feldt - Wichita, KS - KLR650, Derek Ringer, Derby, KS - R1100GS, Barry Wood - Towanda, KS - DL1000 V-strom, and Chris Owens - Garden Plain, KS - Tiger 800XC.

We got an early start from Lake Afton and headed southwest through Harper to Medicine Lodge. We then enjoyed the scenery in the Gypsum Hills stopping numerous times for picture opportunities. We then headed north to Sun City for lunch at Buster's. Following lunch our route took us back to Medicine lodge for a fuel stop before making our way to the Wind Farm off of Isabel Rd. to the northeast. Leaving the wind farm, we picked up the pace to return home to avoid the hottest part of the day. Although it was hot for the return home, proper hydration and sweat generated during rest stops provided the necessary cooling once back on the road.

The overall distance of the route was 214 miles and I am guessing Barry, Ken, and Derek logged closer to 300 due to their commute. I want to thank all the members for an enjoyable ride. All followed the "Golden Rule", so there were no delays looking for lost riders, and we did not have any get-offs or repair delays.
