August 10, 2002 turned out to be a great ride hosted by Dan Mitchell of Chanute. Eleven riders assembled to run from Chanute to Buffalo, Toronto, Quincy, Rocky Ford, Climax, and Eureka. Making the ride: Don Morgan - KTM 640 LC4, Steve Prewitt - Kawasaki KLR650, Tom Hamby - KTM 640 LC4, Derek Williams - Yamaha XT550, Cory Wilson - Yamaha TW200, Dan Mitchell - Suzuki DRZ400S, Greg Mitchell - Suzuki DR350, Teri Frailey - Honda XL350, Jim Foley - Suzuki DR350, Chester Thompson - Kawasaki KLR650, and Roger Baugh - Kawasaki KLR650. After visiting Lake Fagan in Woodson county, Dan and Greg led the group through some excellent two-track areas starting near the Quincy Ranch (see the "modest" ranch house below). From that point, we rode dozens of two-track miles through rolling ranch country. Once again, the dust was thick, so our forays into some valleys and water crossings were a nice diversion. Along the way, a law enforcement officer felt that Tom Hamby's riding style was a little too enthusiastic around Climax, and he was momentarily detained. Fortunately, no citation was issued. We're sure that in the future, Tom will be more subdued when he approaches Climax! We stopped for a late lunch in Eureka at the LoMar Drive-In .... a great place for buffalo burgers! From there the eastern Kansas riders turned home, while those of us from the western parts turned towards the sun, and home. Once again, many thanks to Dan for hosting and leading this ride, and to Greg in his assistance in planning. It was a great ride ... and we enjoyed some excellent views of the Flint Hills of Kansas.
