Labor Day weekend, and Sunday, September 1, 2002. It was too good a day not to ride. Five of us rendezvoused in Cassoday, KS .... along with several hundred road riders for a "Biker Breakfast". We joined in for a hearty fueling of early morning victuals, and had a look at the many makes and models of bikes that had arrived. Making the ride: Don Morgan - KTM 640 LC4, Jim Koenig - Cagiva Elefant, Jim Robinson - KTM 640 LC4 Adventure, Chester Thompson - KLR650, and Roger Baugh - KLR650. Following breakfast, we rode east out of Cassoday towards Teterville. About eleven miles east of Cassoday we turned north on a two-track section that eventually intersected with the Thurman-Kenbro road. After enjoying the view from the high ridgelines near Texaco Hill, we proceeded east to Kenbro, then north to a lone road that runs the distance to Saffordville. From Saffordville, we rode to Strong City, then Cottonwood Falls for a great lunch at the Emma Chase Cafe. Following lunch, we split up for home. On the way back, Don & Roger decided to ride the Satchell Creek valley southwest of Cassoday. In contrast to the near-treeless features of the Flint Hills, this valley was thickly wooded, and featured a number of limestone bridges like the one pictured below. Another great ride in the Flint Hills ..... Click on a thumbnail to view a larger image. Use your browser's "back" button, or the "left" arrow in the navigation bar to return to this page. |
