This has been covered on other sites, thought maybe I would mention it over here. Some of our local police departments in Linn County love to pull bikes over to discuss this. Being a dual purpose rider, standing up is pretty common, now I will only do that out in the county, not in town.

8-1594. Operation of motorcycles. (a) A person operating a motorcycle shall ride only upon the permanent and regular seat attached thereto, and such operator shall not carry any other person nor shall any other person ride on a motorcycle, unless such motorcycle is designed to carry more than one (1) person, in which event a passenger may ride upon the permanent and regular seat if designed for two (2) persons, or upon another seat firmly attached to the motorcycle at the rear or side of the operator.

(b) A person shall ride upon a motorcycle only while sitting astride the seat, facing forward, with one leg on each side of the motorcycle.

(c) No person shall operate a motorcycle while carrying any package, bundle, or other article which prevents such person from keeping both hands on the handlebars.

(d) No operator shall carry any person, nor shall any person ride, in a position that will interfere with the operation or control of the motorcycle or the view of the operator.

Please be aware of the above section if shopping for one of the new Polaris SlingShots.

Years ago, I was leading a patrol that was stopped by law enforcement in Elk County because one of our riders was standing on the pegs. We were polite, handed him a BTKS business card, explained our interest in being in his county, removed our helmets, and explained that after a long day in the saddle, sometimes you have to stand in the stirrups to relieve the tension to the lower posterior. Any rancher/farmer understands this predicament.

The officer then relaxed, explained that hooligans on dirt bikes had been ripping up local pastures .... and now recognized from our demeanor that we weren't those idiots. We all parted in a good way ... no ticket, no ill feelings.

Do no harm in word or deed ... it oftentimes comes back to you .... mc Cool

Kansas Law has addressed the Polaris Slingshot, aka "autocycle": In a nutshell, the only part of it that is addressed as a motorcycle is the fact that it can be registered with a motorcycle license plate. No helmets, no eye protection, no class "M" driver's license. Seat belt and Child restraint laws apply.
