This is June, this is Kansas .... and we do get some wild storms from time to time. Eureka hasn't suffered a tornado "hit" since the 1940s, but all of us who were once Boy Scouts have never forgotten the motto, "Be Prepared!"
There are tornado warning sirens at the lake, but there are no tornado shelters there. There are some WPA-era stone bathrooms at the lake that can serve as shelters.
There is a shelter in town located in the basement of the City Building, also called Memorial Hall. Address is 309 N. Oak. St. See the map below.
Here's the drill ....
1.) If the sirens sound at the lake, better to stay put and seek shelter there. To try to make town (five miles away) puts you on a path leading straight into an oncoming storm. (prairie storms and tornadoes generally move from southwest to northeast)
2.) If someone with a smart phone sees a sizeable storm coming-in on nexrad radar, allow yourselves 10-15 minutes travel time from camp to get situated at the shelter in town.
3.) Sheriff Deputies are set-up to come out to our camp site and keep us posted and make recommendations should things turn ugly.
In all likelihood .... we'll have perfect weather the entire weekend. Just thought it important that everyone knows the drill if weather turns highly unfavorable on us.
Best, Roger _________________
